The notion of life cycle can be used in different areas. In biology , life cycle is understood as alternating generations . This means that, in eukaryotes, sexual reproduction exhibits an alternation of nuclear phases: meiosis derives in a haploid phase and the fusion of the gametes generates a diploid phase.

The marketing or marketing uses the concept of life cycle to analyze the conditions of a product on the market . This assumes that a product goes through various stages from its birth to its end (when it stops producing).

In the development stage, the product is very expensive since it does not generate income. Upon entering the market, the product begins to sell, although with a low sales level. In the stage of product growth, costs begin to be reduced by production to scale and profits increase. The cycle continues with a stage of maturity where the maximum sales levels and the highest profitability are reached. Finally, the stage of decline begins, where sales, prices and profits fall.

In this case, it is essential to underline that at the time that any company carries out the life cycle management of a product that it has in the market it uses, for the development and good results of that, tools as useful as, for example , marketing.

However, other of the instruments that become essential when it comes to achieving optimal results are the budgets, because they allow carrying out the promotion of the product itself, and also what advertising is.

Occasionally, the fact that sales and expected benefits are not obtained, so that those responsible will be forced to take "letters in the matter" to put an end to this situation. Hence, they bet bluntly to develop actions such as the relaunching of the product itself, the extension or update.

According to the point of view of the environment , the life cycle is a concept that allows measuring the environmental impact of a product since its raw materials are extracted from nature until it returns to it as a waste.

In addition to all this we can not ignore the existence of the Ibero-American Life Cycle Network that has the following slogan: "For a sustainable world". And it is that this entity, composed of organizations of different types (educational, government, professional, technological ...), has among its main objectives to ensure that today's society acts to achieve the elimination of the various environmental impacts.

Finally we have to explain that there is a song that is entitled "The life cycle" and that has become part of our cultural heritage. It is the main song of the animated film "The Lion King".

Finally, for engineering and information technology , the development cycle is the period that begins with the implementation of a technological standard and ends with the development of new, more efficient tools.
