The Aroma
The
etymology of aroma takes us to the Latin term aroma , which
comes from the Greek word arōma . A word that was used to come
to define a plant with a lot of fragrance or smell and even a perfume.
The most
common use of the concept is linked to a fragrance or perfume ,
usually pleasant. The aroma, therefore, is something that is captured
through the sense of smell .
What we know
as aroma is a chemical compound composed of odoriferous particles,
which are released from volatile elements and move through the air. These
particles enter the nose through the nostrils and begin their journey through
the olfactory system until the person is able to process them.
It should be
noted that the olfactory capacity of the human being is very limited
if we compare it with the faculties that other species have. For a long
time it was estimated that a person could recognize about 10,000 aromas . Recent
studies, however, maintain that the human nose distinguishes between a
billion aromas . Anyway, the human being has less olfactive capacity
than cats, dogs and birds, to name a few species.
Scents help
detect and evaluate the state of food and environmental hazards (such
as the smell that generates a fire) and are also important at the organic level
to establish a partner. An aroma, on the other hand, can be linked to a
memory to bring to the present a representation of it.
When a person registers
a scent, the smell can cause different sensations. The aroma of freshly
baked bread, for example, can stimulate appetite and make you want to
eat. Instead, the aroma of decaying meat will generate the opposite.
Within the
cultural field we come across the fact that Aroma is also the name of a female
group that has several albums on the market. Among them are "Olfato
femenino", "Amor de tres" or "A hole called rock'n
roll".
In the same
way, there are artistic works that also use that term in their
titles. This would be the case, for example, of the song "Aroma"
of the band Oshare Kei Antic Café. It is a single of the year 2009 and is
part of the album entitled "BB Parallel World".
In the
literary field there are many books that use this word. Examples are
"El aroma del crimen" by Xabier Gutiérrez, "Aroma de mujer"
by Javier María Torres Vigueras, "The scent of spices" by Charlotte
Betts ...
In the same
way, we can not ignore the existence of a chain of perfumeries in Spain that
responds to the name of Aromas. It is a chain that was launched in the 60s
in Seville by the Cardoso family.
In the 80's
and 90's was when that firm was pushed even further, which led to a great expansion
that has led it to have numerous stores not only spread throughout the
Andalusian geography but also by Extremadura and the Community of Madrid.
